'Movember' events will subsidise cost of men's physicals

Men are notoriously reluctant when it comes to getting their health checked so with this in mind, the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre wants to help men over the age of 40 to get a full physical.

Eligible men should visit the centre at 46 Point Finger Road today, and pick up a $150 voucher from reception to go towards the cost of a general physical check-up from their local doctor.

According to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre executive director Tara Soares, a physical would be unique for each man depending on lifestyle and family history.

She said: "In Bermuda we follow the recommendation that men have a prostate health screening exam beginning at age 40."

The digital rectal exam (DRE) remains the most effective test for detecting changes to the prostate. With or without the DRE, general physicals remain a crucial preventive health measure for men.

The Centre's voucher, which is financed by last year's 'Movember' fund-raisers, is valid with any general practitioner on the Island.

The vouchers are available between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. Identification showing date of birth will be required. The vouchers, which can be also used for a prostate test, will be valid from Monday up to the end of January.
