Hornets youngsters will only get better – Ming

Dandy Town veteran Damon Ming has backed the club's crop of homegrown youngsters to blossom this season having been impressed with their displays in the Charity Cup.

Although the Hornets lost 3-2 against Devonshire Cougars in the season curtain raiser, Ming believes only a few minor adjustments are needed before they kick-off their title defence against St.David's at St.John's Field on Sunday.

"Considering it was our first game of the season I thought we played pretty well," said Ming.

"We lacked a little bit of awareness when it came to knocking the ball around, but that's something we can rectify with a few games under our belt."

The Bermuda Hogges winger reckons talented youngsters like Lyn Tucker, Saki Tuzo, Jamal Swan, George Dyer will continue their development this term.

Although he admits the goals of experienced striker Raymond Beach will be crucial in the absence of last season's MVP Nahki Wells who is continuing his education in the UK.

"Beach is a real target man for us. Although the other two strikers did play well, we really didn't have someone who can lay the ball off and make the necessary run at the right time.

"We played well going wide and getting the ball over, but he brings that individual brilliance that every team needs.

"He draws two defenders and this creates space for others and although we don't have Nahki in our team, we still have Lyn who showed what he can do in the game and others who can fill in.

"On Sunday we brought on Saki who helped get the equaliser with the foul he won.

"The younger guys will get better as they get more used to playing at this level.

Ming insists Hornets will not be taking newly promoted St.David's lightly on Sunday.

"We're looking to take every game as it comes because we're totally focused on the league and trying to win it again," he said.

"We won't underestimate any team, we will look at our opponents as if they are the champions, not us, and push for results."
