Maybury having trials with English county side
Promising Somerset and Bermuda all-rounder, Greg Maybury jr, is currently involved in cricket trials in England with Leicestershire County Cricket Club's Under-16 youth team.
The 15-year-old right-arm fast bowler and middle order batsman is a student at Oakham School in the UK where he harbours ambitions to play the game professionally.
Maybury represented Bermuda at the Under-19 World Cup and the Americas Division One Championships last year and since his arrival in the UK his game continues to flourish.
Clevie Wade, who has worked with the teenaged Maybury at the national youth level, believes the budding all-rounder has all the necessary rudiments and temperament required to play county cricket.
"Greg's all-round ability and positive attitude will take him a long way and I certainly feel he can play at the English county level because these are the attributes they (county clubs) look for," the ex-St.George's skipper said.
"If Greg can stay healthy I can certainly see him making the grade in England."
Wade is impressed with Maybury's willingness to learn but what strikes him most is the manner in which the youngster takes instruction to heart.
"I have sat down and had one-on-ones and for a 15-year old cricketer he asks questions that a senior player would about strategy, tactics, field placings and rules and regulations about the game," he added.
"This youngster is spot on and you can only imagine what he is going to be like years down the road when he will have even more experience and knowlege of the game.
"I feel that Greg is going to be an exceptional all-rounder because the ability and knowlege he has for player his age is incredible. He is definitely one for the future."
Maybury is described by his peers as an "outstanding" opening bowler who swings the ball both ways and he can also hold his own with the bat.
Wade agrees.
"I feel his bowling is very spot on; he swings the ball both ways with variation and pace and now his batting has also come on in leaps and bounds. He is a very level headed guy and I can see him becoming a very good all-rounder," he added.
"Greg is now getting top quality coaching in England and also playing against quality opposition and I can definitely see him developing into one of Bermuda's top all-rounders because he definitely has the tools to work with."
The budding all-rounder is the nephew of ex-Somerset skipper Perry Maybury who also swung the ball big.
"He comes from a cricket family and I understand his uncle (Perry) has spent time with him in the nets," Wade added.
"And between his bowling, batting and positive attitude I feel he has the potential to play English county cricket if he continues down the same path he is currently on."
n Bermuda's senior national squad are scheduled to play a –50 over practise match tomorrow against a South African High Performance XI in Pretoria. Gus Logie's team are currently preparing for next month's World Cup qualifying tournament when they will aim to win a spot in the 2011 tournament.
