England women's football star to help local kids
Former England and Arsenal central defender Mary Phillip will be putting young Bermudian footballers through their paces when she arrives to help the Bermuda Brazilian Soccer School (BBSS) during their mid-term camp in just over three weeks' time.
The camp, which runs from February 8 to 12 at BAA Field, will also see former Liverpool, Plymouth and Burnley player Brian Hall make the trek to assist in the week-long event.
BBSS head Cal Blankendal said he was delighted that the two former legends of their respective clubs would take time out to help the Island's young players.
"Our chairman, Peter Wilson, managed to make contact when he was in the UK last summer and was told to keep in touch," said Blankendal. "The opportunity came along to get a highly qualified and talented professional female to the Island to improve the women's game here in Bermuda"
The camp will host some 100 youngsters including 25 to 30 girls.
The 32-year-old Phillip was captain at Fulham where she guided the side to the 'treble', winning the League, FA Cup, and League Cup in the 2002/03 season.
She moved to Arsenal where she won five League and Cup doubles, four trebles and one quadruple that included the UEFA Cup.
She also captained England in the absence of her team-mate Faye White, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury at the start of the 2006/07 season, when they overcame France to secure passage to the World Cup in China. She won a total of 65 caps for the national side before retiring in 2008 after one year with Chelsea.
Hall played eight years for Liverpool, one year at Plymouth Argyle and three seasons for Burnley.
He was voted number 75 in the official Liverpool Football Club website poll – 100 Players 'Who Shook The Kop'.
Registration for next month's camp can be secured via the BBSS website, www.bermudasoccer.org.
Each day begins at 9 a.m. and runs through until 5.30 p.m.
