Police get new search powers from today

Police will have the power to stop and search people thought to be carrying offensive weapons from today.

As part of the second phase of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE), they will be able to check anyone suspected to be in possession of something which could be used in a burglary or to attack someone.

Officers will also be able to search suspects' vehicles.

Police must inform the suspect of the grounds for the search and make a record of it, which when possible can be copied for the suspect.

Announcing the second phase yesterday, Attorney General Kim Wilson said it aimed to provide Police with a clear framework to help them prevent and detecting crime on our streets.

She added: "It also protects the rights of individuals by ensuring that searches are conducted proportionately, appropriately and with good reason in a professional and fair manner."
