Smith heads to Europe in search of football

Khano Smith hopes to resurrect his stuttering career in Europe after spending a week working on his fitness with former team New England Revolution.

The Bermuda international is a free agent after being cast into the football wilderness by struggling MLS outfit New York Red Bulls who released the winger earlier this month.

Smith's agent is now working on setting him up with trials at a number of European teams, with the 28-year-old training with his ex-Revolution team-mates last week in an attempt to maintain his fitness levels.

Revolution goalkeeper coach Gwynne Williams told The Royal Gazette Smith would not be rejoining the Boston-based outfit but said he had looked lively in training.

"Khano spent a week training with us and I think he enjoyed himself," said Williams, a former Mount St. Agnes, Saltus and Sandys Secondary School teacher in Bermuda.

"It was probably just what he needed and obviously he knows most of the players from his time at the club.

"I believe he's off to Europe for tryouts and we wish him all the best. At the moment our roster is full so we can't sign anybody."

Prior to his move to the MLS back in 2005, the ex-Dandy Town man had a string of unsuccessful trials at UK teams, although it is believed League Two side Rochdale did invite him for a second tryout before he signed for Revolution.
