Khano Smith made his first start for New York Red Bulls in more than a month but couldn't prevent them from losing 1-0 at Columbus Crew on Saturday.

Chad Marshall was on target for Crew in a repeat of last season's MLS Cup. Smith, who has not impressed since joining Red Bulls at the start of the season, was substituted after 74 minutes.

And rumours are circulating in the US media that he could be left out when contracts become guaranteed on Wednesday. Red Bulls have already ditched big earner Juan Pietravallo to make room on their roster for new blood.

"We're focusing on strengthening the team, and bringing in players to turn around the results we had in the first part of the season," said sporting director Jeff Agoos.

n Bermuda winger Tyrell Burgess made his fifth appearance of the season as a substitute for defending USL-D1 champions Vancouver Whitecaps in their 2-2 draw at Cleveland City Stars last week.
