Why Lambe's success can inspire other teen players

I was made to feel pretty proud this week after hearing glowing remarks about my young pal, Reggie Lambe, who is doing really well at English professional team Ipswich Town.

New England Revolution assistant coach Paul Mariner returned to his old club Ipswich for a reunion to celebrate winning the UEFA Cup back in 1981.

When I spoke to Paul at training earlier this week he informed me that Reggie was very highly thought of at Ipswich and was making steady progress.

I've known Reggie since he was a little kid and it's great that I'm now able to play alongside him with the Bermuda national team. He's a terrific player with a big future ahead of him and will be receiving a great football education at Ipswich.

He is a very mature 17-year-old and had to grow up quickly when he left his family and friends in Bermuda to try and make the grade in England. In terms of his ability and mentality he's head and shoulders above the other players of his age on the Island and has developed a professionalism about him.

There's nothing wrong with leaving home at such a tender age to try and realise your dreams, and Reggie's success should inspire other young Bermudian footballers to follow in his footsteps.

I gather he managed to get quite a few reserve team matches under his belt last season and would have come up against some seasoned veterans. I've got the feeling I will be hearing many more glowing remarks about Reggie in the future.

In fact, I should be joining up with him in a couple of weeks for Bermuda's preparations for our World Cup qualifiers against Trinidad and Tobago.

The Revs have released me from domestic duties and I will be able to play the second friendly match against Barbados as well as both Trinidad matches. I could miss up to three Revs games, but it can't be helped and your country has to come first.

The Revs have been in good form over the last few weeks and recorded successive victories for the first time this season with wins over Chivas USA and San Jose Earthquakes.

I started on the bench against Earthquakes and when I came on, I missed a really good chance. I was disappointed to have been left out of the starting line-up and I'll be doing everything I can to ensure that it's a trend that doesn't last too long.

There's a lot of football still to be played this season and although I've been reasonably content with my form, I know I can improve. We have a tough game against Columbus Crew on Saturday night, which will be shown on Fox Soccer.

The Crew have started the season really well and we're certainly in for a tough game.

I joined a few of my Revs team-mates in watching Manchester United against Chelsea in the European Cup final yesterday.

A couple of the younger players are renting a house and have a 62-inch screen so a lot of us made our way to their place. Obviously I was cheering on the Reds to victory.

See you at the Corner flag!
