Kendra's show 'Luminous' opens tomorrow night

Artist Kendra Earls is putting on a show at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.

Artist Kendra Earls is about to embark on her first solo exhibition which will take in still life, cityscapes and abstract works.

The exhibition is entitled "Luminous" and will take place at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, in the Botanical Gardens, opening tomorrow.

Although this is her first exhibit of acrylic paintings, she said: "Acrylic is a medium I've worked with for years and after recently working as a set designer and as a mosaic artist, I've gone back to acrylics with different ideas and techniques."

She added: "As with most of my artwork, regardless of the medium, I'm very much inspired by music."

And Shine Hayward will be performing at the Rick Faries Gallery from 6 p.m. "The reason I wanted to include music performed by a musician is because of the influence music has had on my work and my appreciation for the visual and performing arts.

She said she called the show "Luminous", because her goal was to express light in some form.

"Either through contrasting colours or light reflecting from an object in my work," said Mrs. Earls.

"Also, I designed my frames in a natural dark wood stain specifically for this series and where built to fit each art piece so that the work stands out. I describe my work as reflective, bold and colourful."

The artist, who has spent most of her life in Atlanta, Georgia, where she studied art at the Atlanta College of Art, Callanwolde Fine Art Center and Chastain Art Center, has worked in various mediums such as jewellery design, contemporary mosaic and set design.

When asked about her favourite work in the upcoming show, she answered: "I have a few favourites because of the different styles, but one that really expresses me as an artist is 'The Beginning' because of the movement and texture in this piece. It's an abstract piece and says so much."

So was Kendra Earls, who teaches at both Somersfield Academy and Centre for Talented Youth (CTY), a child prodigy?

"As a child I always drew with pencils sketching in the backyard and my father and I would sketch objects around the house.

"Later as a teenager and college student, I was totally interested in architectural and interior design. It was only as an adult that I decided to go back to painting, whilst incorporating that element of design in my work."

On how she finds the time to create, she said she is a part-time teacher at Somersfield Academy which allowed her the time for her artwork.

The opening is from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Masterworks. The after party at G-135, on King Street, in Hamilton.
