Somerset Cup Match stalwart Janeiro Tucker was named the 2009 P & M Electric Cup Match MVP earlier this week after his sterling display with the bat for the challengers at St. George's Cricket Club in the 2009 Cup Match Classic.

The former Somerset skipper now stands atop the record books as the only player to win the prestigious title four times, with his previous three coming in 1999, 2001 and last year's award.

Tucker, who scored a second innings total of 126 not out, also had bowling figures of two for 43 during the two days.

Somerset skipper Jacobi Robinson praised his vice captain for his tremendous achievement and overall body of work throughout his Cup Match career.

"It is nice to see that a Somerset Cup Match player has been selected for this award," said Robinson. "It's shows that the side excelled throughout the two days, especially Janeiro.

"He played a very important role in our team, as he has throughout his Cup Match career, and scoring runs as he did shows his true worth. I think he is the key to us getting the trophy back and he shows it every Cup Match.

"Janeiro knows his role as a senior batsman in our team, so it's up to him to continue to do the things he has been doing.

"This year alone he has been on excellent form at an average of 90 or around that area so he is experienced enough to know how to get amongst the runs and score centuries on the big stage."

Tucker became only the second player behind Clay Smith to have scored three centuries in the Classic, and is second to only Charlie Marshall in all-time runs.

He also owns the record of highest individual score (186) and is the only Somerset batsman to score a century at St. George's Cricket Club.

The Southampton Rangers batsman beat out the likes of St. George's Cricket Club captain Lionel Cann who scored 104 not out, and Stefan Kelly who took eight wickets for 191 runs.
