School unveils mural in memory of Berwyn Cann

Members of Berwyn Cann's family including his sons, wife and sister are seen above after joining staff, Governors and students in the unveiling.

A distinctive mural honouring the late Berwyn Cann as a uniquely distinguished benefactor to Sandys Secondary School has been unveiled in the school's library. Berwyn spend much of his 70-odd yeas in a leadership role, first as a student, a teacher and for more than 50 as a member of its governing body.

Long-serving chairman of the Board of Governors, Travis Gilbert, said Mr. Cann was most valued for his perspective on the school's curriculum and its campus. He praised Sandys Principal Dr. Timothy Jackson for his support of the initiative taken by the Sandys art teacher, Mrs.Barbara Dillas and her students in executing the mural.

Berwyn was also cited as a versatile, excellent administrator, who in his younger days was a gifted, champion-student and inspiring Maths and Physical Education teacher before venturing into the wider commercial world and as one of the leading promoters of the Annual May 24th Marathon Derby.
