Culture Minister Dale Butler yesterday issued a rallying call for everyone in the community to do their bit to make 2009 a memorable year of anniversary celebrations.

"Tell your friends, tell your neighbours: Bermuda is about to kick off the biggest party in 400 years!" Mr. Butler said in a speech at the House of Assembly.

"Some members of our community have already been working on 2009 for more than a year. But the best is yet to come, and I would like to ask all of you to keep involved or get involved.

"If you represent an organisation, it's not too late to have your event included on our calendar of events. If you are an individual there are plenty of volunteer opportunities available.

"Let's keep up the fabulous effort and do justice to this wonderful year ahead.

"I wish to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who has been working diligently to make 2009 a momentous and unforgettable celebration."

The Minister gave an update on the progress of plans for events throughout the year, starting with a launch party on Saturday, January 3, and including among others:

• Native Bermuda Festival by the St. David's Islanders and native community;

• 'Verdmont, The Untold Story' by the National Trust;

• 'The Story Of The Old Elliot School' by Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation;

• The Bermuda Festival;

• The Premier's Gala;

• A play featuring the historic wreck of the Sea Venture;

• Imagine Bermuda's 50th anniversary celebrations of the theatre boycott.
