UK 'to face Greek-style budget cuts'
LONDON (Bloomberg) — Britain will face the sort of budget-cutting measures endured by Greece after tomorrow's general election, provoking "widespread resistance" by UK workers, the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers said.
"We pledge our solidarity with the Greek workers striking today who are fighting back against European Union-imposed cuts to services and attacks on living standards," Bob Crow, the union's general secretary, said in an e-mailed statement.
"What's happening in Greece today is coming to the UK after Thursday and there will be industrial and public resistance across the country on a scale unprecedented since the end of the second world war."
With one day to go until the election, Britain's main parties have warned that the need to reduce the record budget deficit will mean spending cuts. Greek government workers shut down schools and hospitalsyesterday in protests against additional wage cuts and tax increases announced after the EU agreed on a 110 billion-euro ($144 billion) bailout for the nation.
"We know what's coming in the UK after Thursday and it's more of the same — massive public spending cuts and an all-out assault on living standards," Crow said.
His union represents more than 80,000 workers.
