Triathlete Duffy back on course

Flora Duffy believes she is slowly rediscovering the sparkling form that made her one of the most promising young triathletes in the world, writes Stephen Wright.

Prior to this season, Duffy had endured a difficult past few years through loss of form and health problems, but has started showing signs of being on the comeback trail with some impressive performances of late.

At the weekend she finished her season by bagging two gold medals for Team Bermuda at the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships in Guadeloupe in the time trials and road race.

The 23-year-old also scooped a silver medal at this summer's CAC Games in the women's triathlon in Puerto Rico and is confident her past troubles are firmly behind her.

"I'm slowly getting back to my top form. This year was all about getting back into racing and progressing to where I want to be," said the University of Colorado student. "There is still a lot of work to be done but things are moving in the right direction. This winter I will focus more on my running as right now that's the area that needs to improve the most."

Duffy, who was selected for the US Collegiate All-Star cycling team this season, said her top finish in the time trial in Guadeloupe had surprised her as it was not usually her strongest event.

"I'm really pleased with how the weekend went. I went there with the goal of winning the road race but to be honest had no idea what to expect, as I did not know what the course was going to be like or what girls were racing.

"Winning the TT was an added bonus. It's not usually a strength of mine but I managed to put together a good ride which set me up nicely for the road race the following day. To pull off two wins was a great way to end the season."

University commitments have prevented Duffy from competing in this weekend's Bank of Bermuda Triathlon at Clearwater – an event she won as a teenager. She does, however, plan to return home next month for the SheRox Triathlon, the fast growing all-women's sprint distance triathlon series.

Duffy said: "I will not be back for the Bank of Bermuda Triathlon. Maybe if I was not in school I would fly back but it is just not possible after racing the past two weekends in a row. I have won it before though, quite a few years ago . . . I think when I was 15 or 16. I will be back to race the SheRox triathlon though in November."
