Excitement over new chick at the aquarium
Zookeepers are tickled pink about the latest arrival at Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo — this little flamingo chick.
The hatchling, who is yet to be named, arrived on Sunday at 3.45 p.m. and is the first flamingo born at the popular tourist venue this year.
Keepers won't know until it grows up whether it is male or female.
The new arrival is white at the moment, and won't take on the famous pink hue until adulthood.
Head zookeeper Robin Marirea explained: "They tend to go grey for the first few months, then white and pink, and by year two will be fully pink."
He added: "It's very difficult to see the little guy from the visitor area but in four or five days he should be fully mobile and moving around from mud mount to mud mount."
Mr. Marirea hopes a further seven to eight eggs will hatch over the coming days, to add to the 64-strong flamingo flock at the zoo.
Each has to be incubated for 28 days, with the current sunny and dry weather improving the chances of success.
