Combining music with brilliant floral designs
'Craftsman's Art and Music's Measure for thy pleasure all combined.' — William Shakespeare.
Fine music and exquisite floral displays make a particularly attractive combination, as those who attend the Ensemble Singers' Summer Concert and Flower Festival at Wesley Methodist Church on June 21 will quickly discover.
Directed by Lloyd Matthew, the Ensemble Singers' repertoire consists of sacred and secular classical literature as well as contemporary music. On this occasion, they will perform works by Randall Thompson, David Dickau, Fauré, and the 'Kyrie' from Vierne's 'Mass Solennel'.
Helping to celebrate the recent restored of Wesley's 1924 Casavant organ, and highlight its new excellence, will be featured guest artist Brian Jones, who is director of music and organist emeritus at Trinity Church on Copley Square in Boston.
His programme will include literature from the Baroque and Romantic periods, as well as popular and well-known organ classics from the modern repertoire.
Members of the Garden Club of Bermuda, under the direction of Jean Motyer, will enhance the musical experience with celebratory floral designs.
Mr. Jones' career details are impressive, but too extensive to relay here. (For full details see his website: www.brianjonesmusic.com).
Briefly, as an organ concert artist, he has performed in many parts of the US and England, and his programmes have been praised for their variety and interest, as well as for the artistic and communicative integrity he brings to organ music.
He has been heard in such venues as the National Cathedral, Washington, DC, and St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and has often played at conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society, and the Association of Anglican Musicians. With flutist Susan Clarke he has performed many programmes exploring a wide range of the literature for flute and organ, and he has also released many recordings of organ solo music, music for brass and organ, for piano and organ, and with the Trinity Choir.
A reviewer described his highly acclaimed performance at the Romantic Organ Symposium in Milwaukee as having "life, passion, excitement — all elements too seldom heard in any organ recital, indeed too seldom heard in any recital."
He has played many dedication recitals of new and rebuilt organs, and has been praised for his ability to communicate the breadth, depth and brilliance of a new instrument to members of congregations which have invested significant resources in such a new venture.
The Ensemble Singers are an auditioned group whose members are selected for their talent and collective commitment to delivering the highest performance standard of choral music, both here and abroad.
Director Lloyd Matthew is a noted music educator and organist. He is the organist at Wesley Methodist Church, and principal of the Bermuda School of Music.
The Ensemble Singers, a registered charity, completed their first overseas tour in 2004, and their second was in March this year when they travelled to Bridgetown, Barbados to raise funds in support of the restoration of the organ restoration at the Cathedral church of St. Michael and All Angels. It was the group's first performance in the West Indies, and they were joined by Bermudian singers Gary Burgess and Ru-Zelda Severin. On both occasions, the concerts were a success, and the singers were very well received.
The Ensemble Singers give three annual concerts in Bermuda each year, part proceeds of which go to its Music Education Award Scheme, which encourages young Bermudians to pursue a career in music. Their November, 2008 concert will feature Gounod's 'St. Cecelia Mass', followed by the traditional Christmas concert in December.
• The June 21 concert will begin at 7.30 p.m and tickets ($35) are available from the Music Box, Wesley Methodist Church office, and members of The Ensemble Singers.
