Archives displaying rare slavery-related documents

Rare documents regarding the Island's history leading up to Emancipation are on display in the Public Reading Room at the Bermuda Archives.

Among the documents are Bermuda's original slave registers, which were mandated by the British Government.

The registers are considered to be one of the most comprehensive sources for the study of slavery on the Island, and were restored in 2004.

Contemporary documents and images will also be on display alongside the registers.

A second exhibit with similar materials has been installed in the Bermuda College library. Both exhibits will run until November 28.

The Bermuda Archives, located on the lower level of the Government Administration Building, are open between 8.30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
