Experts to speak at diabetes public seminar

Four internationally-acclaimed experts on diabetes will present a public education seminar at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute tomorrow evening.

Dr. Bruce Bode is from the Atlanta Diabetes Associates, Dr. Tom Flood is from the Georgia Centre for Diabetes, Dr. James Gavin is a past president of the American Diabetes Association and Dr. Annabel Fountain is a Bermudian currently specialising in Endocrinology and Diabetes at Hammersmith and Imperial College in the UK.

According to the Bermuda Diabetes Association, the event will provide insight into the latest medical therapies and approaches to living with the disease.

Latest estimates show that by 2025, a total of 445 million people worldwide will be affected by diabetes.

Debbie Jones, from the Association, said: "Obesity is the underlying risk factor of type 2 diabetes. These speakers will not only address obesity but will also address hypertension and heart disease as well as the other devastating complications associated with diabetes such as kidney and eye disease."

Free blood screening will be available from 6 p.m. onwards together with door prizes. Auditorium presentations begin at 7 p.m. Reservations are not required. Contact the Bermuda Diabetes Centre on 297 8427 for further information.
