Diabetes world experts to speak tonight

The world's top diabetes experts are to hold a public forum this evening (Thursday) on the latest advancements in treatment of the disease.

Nine specialists from the UK, Europe and the US have been invited to the Island by the Bermuda Heart Foundation and the Bermuda Diabetes Association. They are to take part in a four-day symposium, speaking to doctors and nurses on the latest clinical trial findings, patient care techniques, management methodologies and treatment.

Each is an expert in several facets of diabetes and heart disease two conditions considered to be an epidemic in Bermuda and around the world.

According to recent statistics, 14 percent of Bermuda's population has diabetes. The majority has Type 2, the onset of which is considered a result of unhealthy lifestyle habits.

Heart disease is the number one killer of Bermudians and when combined, these two diseases place a heavy burden on our healthcare system.

"Diabetes is an ever-changing, ever-evolving condition," said Debbie Jones, founder of the Bermuda Diabetes Association.

"The goal of the symposium is to bring as many of the top experts from around the world together to further educate our healthcare professionals and the public on the newest thinking in terms of treatment and prevention.

"Our panelists have expertise in diabetes and pregnancy, diabetes and heart disease, knowledge of the newest treatment paradigms, world policy development and much more.

"We invite the public to participate and learn more about a condition that they might be affected by, or perhaps a family member or friend is affected by."

The forum takes place this evening in the Fairmont Southampton's Gardenia Room at 7 p.m.
