Man who defied road ban twice is jailed

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner

A Pembroke man was sentenced to 30 days' imprisonment after being caught driving while disqualified twice.

Twenty-one-year-old Delgado Smith, of Crossland Lane, was pulled over while riding on March 14 by officers on patrol around Middle Terrace, Pembroke.

Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess told Magistates' Court that Smith identified himself as "Keene Taylor" to the officers, who noticed he appeared nervous.

Smith then ran away, jumping over a wall to make his escape.

On April 29, officers on patrol in the same area spotted Smith and recognised him. Asked for his details, Smith gave his correct name and address and was subsequently arrested for driving while disqualified.

Smith had his licence suspended last September for speeding. He was caught riding a bike illegally in December and his suspension was stretched to two years.

In Magistrates' Court yesterday Smith pleaded guilty, saying that he had "went to get food".

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner responded: "When you're in Westgate, you won't have to worry about food."

Smith was sentenced to 30 days' imprisonment and fined $400. He also received ten demerit points.
