Comic waits for big break – or a chance to learn our accent
Bootsie's Comedy Club will present comic Mike Yard on Good Friday.
Bootsie figured that after people had finished flying their kites for the day, he would offer them yet another laugh.
Mr. Yard has headlined in comedy clubs across the country, been featured repeatedly on BET's Comicview, has appeared on Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jam, at the Apollo Comedy Hour, and hosted the Afripalooza Comedy Tour.
In addition, Mr. Yard appeared on 'P. Diddy Presents the Bad Boys of Comedy' amongst many other roles and as a solo act.
He was also nominated for being the most thought provoking comic at the Black Comedy Awards in New York City.
Local comics will also be on offer and they include Nadanja Bailey and Climaxx.
The St. Croix, US Virgin Islands-born and Brooklyn-based comic got into comedy after seeing a friend of his doing stand-up.
"After seeing him, I figured hell, 'if he could do it I could definitely do it'," he said.
"So, I went to the Uptown Comedy Club in Harlem and tried it, and I've been hooked ever since.
"I have been doing this for 14 years now."
Although, he admits to still waiting for his "big break", he says: "Doing 'Bad Boys' was fun.
"It was shot in Brooklyn and I'm from Brooklyn so we had a blast.
"There are a few comedians from Brooklyn and some who like to claim Brooklyn, after all we are the best borough.
"I would have to say the highlight of my career so far has been performing for Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition's National Convention."
When asked if his aim was to be a TV star, he said: "Believe it or not I don't really want to be a television star, my goal is to be considered one of the best stand-up comedians ever."
All in all he is looking forward to having some fun on the Island.
"I'm interested in learning your accent, as that is one of the few that I can't do yet. Let's have a good time."
Tickets $25, are available from the Club or by ringing 732-6817. Showtime is 9.30 p.m. at Bootsie's Comedy Club on Front Street, Hamilton.
