Best tourney opens the door for talented teens

Bermuda's top youngsters will have the chance to impress talent scouts from top French club FC Sochaux and MLS franchise Colorado Rapids with both teams gracing The Clyde Best Invitational Youth Football Tournament.

The four-team contest will feature two Island teams with Bermuda Football Association (BFA) technical director Derek Broadley and Dandy Town coach Scott Morton performing the coaching duties.

Only players born in 1994 will be able to play in the round-robin tournament, which runs from February 13-15 at the National Sports Centre.

Now in its third year, the tournament will be promoted and organised by the BFA for the first time and Broadley believes it will be a golden opportunity for gifted young players to get spotted by youth academies from the US and Europe.

"It's important we bring a good group of foreign players to Bermuda to compete against our own players," said Broadley. "This is going to be a starting point for something we are going to grow substantially.

"It will give us a good gauge of where our young players are at and will lift the standard to where it was when Clyde Best was playing as a youngster."

Former West Ham striker Best said the Bermuda Football Foundation (BFF), which launched the tournament in 2007, had now been brought into the "same pot" as the BFA.

"For our kids to improve they need to play against better opposition. Bringing these two professional clubs to Bermuda will enable that," said Best.

Connecticut Olympic Development Programme will also play a Bermuda select team and two domestic clubs although they will not take part in the actual tournament.

"They felt with the level of competition we've brought in this year they weren't quite ready for the event yet," said Broadley. "Although they will not take part in the tournament they will play three games and be part of the festival of football."

Broadley recently returned from a trip to the UK where he met with officials from Scottish Premier League clubs Glasgow Rangers and Hamilton Academicals as well as English Championship side Watford about developing partnerships with Bermuda.

Later this week he travels to St. Louis, Missouri, with ex-Devonshire Colts player Darrin Lewis, now an officer for Physical Education and Health, for the annual National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) convention.

During the convention Broadley will receive his Masters Coaching Diploma certificate and work to create more opportunities for Bermuda players to win soccer scholarships overseas.
