Cinco de Mayo may not be a household phrase but that's no reason to stop the parties!

Celebrations for Cinco de Mayo will be going on around the world and Bermuda is no exception with most events taking place this weekend.

So what is Cinco de Mayo?

Well, it is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities marking the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla.

Although the Mexican army was eventually defeated, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that the country and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves of any foreign intervention, especially, those from imperialist states, bent on world conquest.

In the United States, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to be known as simply Cinco de Mayo of the fifth of May.

Over, the years Cinco de Mayo has become very commercialised and many people see it as a time for fun and dance and it has made its way to Bermuda with various celebrations and festivities happening across the Island.

Tomorrow, Latin Restaurant and Rum Bar, in conjunction with Cerveza Sol and Dos Equis, will present a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta for the family.

The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Latin, promises to be an explosion of dance and music, the day starts at 3 p.m. with a Happy Hour Siesta where the family can enjoy an afternoon of Mexican tapas, face painting, and piñata breaking.

From 8 p.m. people can party to live Congo drums, watch a Latin dance showcase by the Sabor Dance School. DJ Nice will then perform with cool house, dance, R&B and top 40 tunes.

Other Cinco de Mayo Celebrations that are supported by Sol and Dos Equis are as follows.

The Bistro Beach Happy Hour Fiesta, takes place tonight from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., while Club Azione, will feature an Authentic Mexican Showcase tomorrow from 10 p.m. with complimentary Sol and Dos Equis before midnight, while to ensure everyone gets home safe they are offering complimentary Fiji designated driver.

The Lemon Tree, is hosting Mexican for a Day on May 5, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., offering complimentary Sol and Dos Equis and are also offering complimentary Fiji designated driver.

And Casey's Lounge will have fiesta time deals until May 5.

In addition, for parties that are not being supported by Sol and Dos Equis, members of Patron Zone have been invited to the Pre-Cinco De Mayo Cruise.

There will be pure vibez and things from DJ Aztec, DJ Scarface and the Y.G.S. family.
