Colts coach Jones in hot water
Bermuda Football Association (BFA) executive Ray Jones is likely to appear before a disciplinary committee to face allegations of making threatening remarks to referee Ronue Cann at Devonshire Colts' recent match against Dandy Town.
In a strongly worded press release issued last night, local football's governing body made it clear "it does not condone the actions of any coach, player, fan or member of the Executive Council as per the allegations".
But the BFA did stress that should Jones be summoned before a disciplinary committee he would do so in his role as a coach and not as a BFA executive – although they have not ruled out taking action against him "in respect of his role as treasurer of the BFA".
Cann, who quit in protest of Jones' alleged transgressions, wrote the Colts coach up in his official match report for conduct he deemed as "threatening" and "inappropriate" for a man holding office at the association.
"The Bermuda Football Association can confirm that it has received the referee's report as it pertains to the alleged behavior of Devonshire Colts coach Ray Jones during the Dandy Town versus Devonshire Colts match at St.John's Field on Sunday November 2," BFA general secretary David Sabir said.
"The Executive Council (of the BFA) would like to categorically state that it does not condone the actions of any coach, player, fan or member of the Executive Council as per the allegations.
"The BFA receives and assesses every report submitted by our referees and we will do the same in this case. The BFA also adheres to the regulations governing disciplinary matters and therefore will refrain from prejudicing this matter prior to it being placed before the disciplinary committee.
"We (BFA) make a further plea to everyone concerned with the game of football to exercise some restraint and understand that the referees have a role to play in the conduct and control of matches and without them football will come to an abrupt halt."
Jones is no stranger to controversy and has a history of runs-ins with match officials and is understood to have been reprimanded as recently as last September for allegedly making "unsportsmanlike" comments to referee George O'Brien during a Martonmere Cup match involving Colts and North Village at BAA Field.
He is also alleged to have landed himself in hot water while coaching a Bermuda youth squad at the 2007 Dallas Cup where, according to observers, Jones had to be escorted from the grounds by security personnel after allegedly making distasteful remarks at match officials.
Jones, who was elected as BFA treasurer during the association's AGM last September, did not return calls to The Royal Gazette yesterday.
Meanwhile, Bermuda Referees Association (BRA) were due to meet last night to discuss and consider what course of action to take over the matter that is sure to put an even bigger strain on an already depleted roster of match officials.
"There is a meeting being held tonight (last night) in which this (case involving Cann and Jones) will be one of the items on the agenda," stated BRA president Anthony Francis, who also serves on the BFA executive.
Former Somerset Trojans footballer and Southampton Rangers coach Cann dropped a bombshell when he quit following his confrontation with Jones.
"After the game he (Jones) threatened me by saying he is going to see to it that I get suspended.
"He (Jones) said he is going to see to it that I get suspended from refereeing," Cann alleged.
"During the match he made comments that I am on the take. And then after the match he said I was worthless and threatened me.
"As a referee I am only going to call what I see and for a BFA executive and coach to make remarks like that is very inappropriate and certainly sends the wrong message."
Cann, who officiated at last year's Island Games in Greece, is the first referee to quit officiating the game under controversial circumstances since Lyndon Raynor.
Raynor threw in the towel three-years ago amid heavy criticism for calls he made in North Village's controversial 2-1 win against Dandy Town at Bernard Park.
