Road safety campaign group CADA is urging the public to travel safely over the Cup Match weekend.

Buses will be available on both days of the holiday and a special ferry schedule will be in operation.

Taking a cab or appointing a designated driver are also options for safe travel, said Anthony Santucci chairman of CADA — Encouraging Responsible Alcohol Behaviour.

"Put the phone numbers of cab drivers you know into your cell phone and when you are ready to leave a function or the game, give them a call.

"Even better, before you leave home arrange for a cab driver to collect you from an agreed place at an agreed time.

"Or you can be the designated driver, consume non-alcoholic beverages so you can volunteer and make sure family and friends get home safely," he said.

CADA's own shuttle bus will be running outside the LOM building at the corner of Reid and Burnaby streets on Friday between 3.15 a.m. and 3.45 a.m.

Bermuda has recorded 61 road deaths in the last four-and-a half years, Mr. Santucci said.

Research shows that alcohol or drugs played a role in seven out of ten of these deaths, meaning approximately 43 people have died as a result of impaired driving in that period, he added.

"If you are going to consume alcohol over the Cup Match holiday, please put a plan in place to get home safely, do not become a tragic statistic. We have a lot of information, including bus and ferry schedules, on our website.

"You will have noticed blue and white signs and banners around Bermuda these are to remind the public that there are several options to drinking and driving."
