Runner Dill in medal glory

Middle distance runner Shaquille Dill won the gold medal for Bermuda in the 800 metres at the CAC Junior Championships yesterday.

Dill came out on top in the Under-20 male category with a time of one minute 52.92 seconds.

His compatriot, Henry Stevens-Carty took silver in the same race, posting a finish of 1:53.74.

Bermuda's other medal winner in the Dominican Republic was sprinter Jeneko Place, who enhanced his glowing reputation by claiming silver in the Under-17 boy's 200m (21.91) and bronze in 100m (11.02).

In the other sprint events, Victoria Clarke achieved a personal best in the Under-17 girl's 100m preliminary heats (24.89) before coming seventh in the final.

Tristan Joynes finished sixth in the Under-20 men's 110m hurdles final (14.72), and Shuntae Hendrickson 8th in the 800m Under-17 girl's event.

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson, said she was pleased with the Island's four-medal haul.

"We came out with four medals from the 16 athletes which I am pleased with," she said.

"The competition in the CAC region is a bit harder than Carifta.

"The distance events are normally dominated by the Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, most of the South American countries and therefore our athletes found it a bit tough in the 1200, 1500 and 3000 metres.

"I'm very proud and pleased with our athletes as they really performed well and for some the season still has not finished."

Tomorrow, Bermuda athletes Tre Houston (100m, 200m) and Aaron Evans (800m) head out to Miami for the NAC Under-23 Championships.

Arantxa King (long junp) and Latroya Darrell (high jump) were also eligible for the competition but had to pull out because of school commitments.
