Ill seaman brought ashore from Belgium-bound tanker

A crewman on a chemical tanker heading to Belgium from Texas was brought ashore to Bermuda yesterday after collapsing on board his ship.

The 38-year-old Filipino was found slumped on the floor by shipmates on the177-metre long and 11-metre deep Stolt Emerald chemical carrier.

His right side was completely numb and he was incoherent, according to a report given to Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre when the boat was about 250 miles south east of the Island.

The pilot cutter St. David was sent to meet the 24,000-ton tanker a couple of miles off shore, where a doctor boarded the vessel.

The St. David brought the crewman back to Ordnance Island just before 9.30 a.m. where an ambulance was waiting to take him to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. The Stolt Emerald continued on her journey to Antwerp from Houston.
