BFA stay silent on police meeting
The Police and the Bermuda Football Association met yesterday to discuss how to handle the problem of violence flaring up at soccer games. This comes on the heels of Sports Minister Glenn Blakeney meeting with both the Police and BFA officials.
BFA General Secretary David Sabir refused the discuss what was said at the meeting but described it as "productive".
He said: "We are not making any comment right now. We met with the Police and we are going to follow through with all the procedures we said we would do (last week). What we don't want to do is preempt anything. We are going to come out with a full statement in due course but not right now. We want to speak with one voice. It was a very good meeting and we will soon announce the procedures that we are going to put in place."
The latest violence came earlier this month at Southampton Oval when players left the under-23 Professional Development League game. As they got into vehicles to leave the ground violence erupted from a crowd of about 20 outside the gate.
Bottles and rocks were thrown and a taxi cab transporting some of the Boulevard players was extensively damaged.
Last week BFA officials said that the gang-related violence was becoming too much for them to handle.
"The events that occurred at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club remind us once again that this anti-social behavioural problem that is being manifested between and among rival groups and gangs is bigger than the BFA and our clubs can tackle alone," the BFA said.
