Outerbridge steadies nerves after shaky start
Bermuda 237 Canada 14-0
In-form batsman Stephen Outerbridge anchored Bermuda's first innings by hitting a measured 79 runs against Canada in day one of the Intercontinental Cup yesterday.
The left-handed stroke-player, who scored 56 in the third One Day International (ODI) earlier this week, forged productive partnerships with James Celestine (47) and skipper Irving Romaine (30) to account for the bulk of Bermuda's 237 total.
The Islanders won the toss and elected to bat but got off to a miserable start losing both openers, Chris Foggo and Oronde Bascome, without troubling the scorers.
But Gus Logie's young team have shown during this current tour that they are made of sterner stuff these days, and Outerbridge stepped up to the plate to ensure Bermuda's bowlers at least have some sort of total to bowl at.
Vice-captain Rodney Trott also weighted in with a watchful 22 and was well supported by Jekon Edness who hit a quickfire 25, before both players fell in quick succession to expose the tail.
Ryan Steede, Stefan Kelly, Dwayne Leverock and George O'Brien all fell cheaply with slow left armer Sunil Dhaniram doing the damage for Canada, picking up four wickets for 70 runs.
Canada faced seven overs before the close of play and will resume today on 14 without loss. Bermuda's bowling attack has been boosted by the return of pace ace Stefan Kelly, and with O'Brien, Steede and Leverock all fresh after being rested for the third ODI, Bermuda will be looking to pick up early wickets and remove the dangerous Abdool Samad, who scored a century against them on Tuesday.
Bermuda have lost all four of their Intercontinental Cup games so far while Canada have just one win - against the UAE - to their name.
The chances of Logie's team making the top-two in the eight team round robin tournament and progressing to the final are virtually non-existent.
