Bermuda under-23s should have been celebrating their maiden win of the summer after outplaying Pittsburgh Riverhounds – but failed to capitalise on a hatful of goalscoring chances.

The impressive Keishen Bean was chief culprit and was unable to add to his second-half strike, missing at least two glorious opportunities to pull his team level.

Scott Morton's side started slowly and it was no surprise when Riverhounds took the lead after a defensive lapse allowed striker Sean Bucknor to tap home from close range midway through the first-half.

But a much improved second-half display saw the under-23s largely dominate their more experienced opponents with dogs of war Seion Darrell and Jason Davis enjoying plenty of possession in the centre of midfield.

Against the run of play Riverhounds extended their advantage through Joseph Zewe with a dubious goal that was awarded despite the assistant referee flagging for offside.

Encouragingly, the under-23s showed plenty of character to fight back and scored almost immediately with Bean the quickest to react after Angelo Simmons cannoned a shot against the post.

Bermuda continued to craft openings with Bean going close twice, while Davis saw a venomous effort superbly saved by 'keeper Eric Barnes.

Coach Scott Morton said although he was disappointed his team were unable to record their first victory over USL-D2 opposition he was pleased with the progress being made.

"I thought we were unfortunate not to get a positive result out of the game," said Morton.

"Although winning is not our ultimate goal from these matches, our confidence and belief would grow if we could (win a match).

"Overall I was very pleased with our performance tonight and I think this group of players have shown that they have a lot of character.

"If someone would have told me that we would have made this amount of progress in such short space of time then I would have been delighted.

"We have one more match this summer and then most of these players will go back school overseas. But the guys that stay will keep training with the national academy as it's important we keep this momentum going."

The under-23s are next in action against Charlotte Eagles at BFA Field on Friday July 31.
