Simmons makes his mark with U-23s

Derek Broadley is tipping Angelo Simmons to fall under the radar of USL-D2 talent scouts after watching the mercurially gifted winger trouble Richmond Kickers.

Bermuda Under-23s went down 4-0 against the USL-D2 team on Sunday night but controlled large portions of the first period with Boulevard's Simmons offering plenty of attacking threat.

Technical director Broadley has no doubt Simmons has the ability to grace a higher level and believes a number of the Under-23 players could attract the interest of USL-D2 coaches this summer.

"Angelo looked like the player most likely to make a difference for us during our game against Kickers," he said. "He caused their defence problems with his pace and is a very unpredictable player.

"He works tirelessly for the team and had to come off in the end because he was absolutely shattered. He has a lot of ability and is one of a few of our players who I think will fall under the radar of the USL-D2 teams we play against the summer."

Broadley is adamant the Under-23s are slowly acclimatising to the rigours and physicality of the USL-D2 level and was encouraged by their first half display.

"To be honest I thought we were probably the better team for much of the first half," Broadley said.

"We played two 40 minute periods and we conceded just before half-time. If we had gone into the break leading I don't think it would have done us an injustice."

"After the break they got stronger and our boys tired a bit and I think the intensity of this level has taken a few of them by surprise. Overall I think it was a big improvement on our opening game against Harrisburg City Islanders. We're parading ourselves as an Under-23 team but the reality is most of our players are aged 20 or younger."

Training attendances have been high for the Under-23s and Broadley believes that shows that the impressive new BFA Field facility and level of coaching provided by his backroom team is having the desired effect.

"Numbers have been great in training but there's still a few boys who we'd like to see. I think BFA Field has had a big impact on that. It goes to show if you provide the players with a good facility and enjoyable coaching then they will come out.

"Ajani Gibbons was injured for the game against Kickers but he still came down to support us and that's so encouraging to see."

Bermuda Under-23s play Wilmington Hammerheads next Monday and Wednesday at BFA Field.
