Bermuda Democratic Alliance calls for improvements to St. George infrastructure

The Bermuda Democratic Alliance is calling for numerous improvements to the infrastructure of St. George to draw locals, tourists and international business to the town.

As part of its St. George's Revitalisation Plan, BDA suggests working with developers to create business complexes, a first class marina and a boardwalk stretching across the town's waterfront.

"While St. George's is a far cry from the town it once was, it is salvageable if action takes place soon," the BDA say in the plan. "St. George's must take advantage of its natural resources and focus on local consumers.

"Creating opportunities for new businesses increases revenue for the town. The Bermuda Government must allow concessions so that the town will attract business back."

Suggestions include payroll tax breaks for new companies, start-up loans with low interest and moving some Government offices to the East End.

The BDA also suggest creating an Economic Empowerment Zone in the East End.

The concept that has been discussed for the last several years and was recently raised by Premier Paula Cox in this year's Throne Speech.

To improve tourism, the plan suggests working to find smaller cruise ships that can visit the town in recent years the number of ships visiting the area has plummeted.

Only one ship made regular visits this summer.

Mayor Kenneth Bascome has discussed the concept of dredging or straightening Town Cut to allow larger ships, but he said that environmental studies would have to be carried out before any final decision is made.

Other ideas raised by the BDA include providing more and better tours through the town, hiring a PR firm to advertise the East End and creating an international event revolving around its World Heritage status.

The BDA also called for an improved infrastructure with better sewage and fresh water facilities for East End residents.

It also suggested security could be improved through a permanent Police presence and better CCTV system.
