Walton Brown is helping shape international guidelines on violence and harassment at work.

The home affairs minister is part of a Bermuda delegation at the 107th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, which is advising the Standard Setting Committee on the issue.

Mr Brown is joined on the delegation by Bermuda Trade Union Congress president Jason Hayward, Bermuda Employer’s Council president Keith Jensen and Government’s labour relations manager Gabrielle Cann.

Earlier this year, Mr Brown vowed to toughen up Bermuda’s laws on sexual harassment at work. He brought international speaker Minna Salami to the island to talk on the topic.

Mr Brown said: “Currently high on Bermuda’s agenda is the growing number of workplace sexual harassment incidents.

“As a result, I am seeking to amend the legislation to address these issues and provide for adequate sanctions, as the current labour legislation does not provide for the same.”

The annual conference, taking place from May 28 to June 8, brings together the tripartite delegations from the organisation’s 187 member states to consider topics related to the world of work.

Mr Brown is also aiming to simplify Bermuda’s labour laws by consolidating legislation into one statutory instrument.

He created a tripartite committee to review current legislation, consult with social partners and provide recommendations on reform.
