Striker begs Bascome to return

Boulevard striker Angelo Simmons is urging Andrew Bascome to remain at Blazers until the end of the season as he fears a new coach will disrupt their title challenge.

It is understood Bascome walked out on the club on the eve of their top-of-the-table clash against PHC after running out of patience with his team's poor training attendances.

According to club sources, Bascome arranged a mandatory training session on Saturday morning but the only player who bothered to turn up was US college midfielder Philip Parsons.

Although near the top of the standings, Blazers have now lost their last three games to Devonshire Cougars, Southampton Rangers, and PHC, and those close to Bascome have suggested he was not prepared to put up with the lack of commitment any longer.

But Simmons, 23, is praying the row will blow over as Blazers bid to get their stuttering season back on track.

"I don't know what's going on at the moment," said Simmons. "I don't think it has anything to do with the club or anything like that but rather the commitment of the players.

"I thought he (Bascome) was going to be at the (PHC) game but wasn't so I don't know what's going to happen. I heard the problem was because a lot of our team hadn't been coming to training, but I've seen some good numbers out.

"Some guys are busy with their lives and so forth so I can't speak on that, but I know we all still want Andrew here."

In his first season at Blazers, Bascome led the team to the FA Cup title and runners-up in the Premier Division and Simmons reckons the esteemed coach is irreplaceable.

"Andrew's a good man and a great coach who has helped us a lot in what we are trying to achieve," he said. "He bought his youth system (Bascome FC) with him when he came and he wants to see the club succeed.

"The best scenario would be for him to stay with us until the end of the season and then make a decision as to what he does next. Hopefully we can win a cup to send him off properly.

"It's important for him to stay because a different coach would only hinder us in what we're trying to achieve this season.

"We have the best coach on the Island, he has won everything he can and it will be a big loss. If you look at our form at the moment we aren't getting results but we're still in the hunt."

Bascome's departure will alert the likes of Devonshire Cougars who are without a coach, and tried to lure Bascome to the Rec. over the summer.

However, Bascome is also part of the Robin Hood set-up, and may well decide to dedicate his energy to getting the league newcomers into the Premier Division at the first time of asking.
