If planning permission is granted, a new burial ground will be established at land on Cochrane Road, Dockyard.

An application has been made to the Development Applications Board for the cemetery, which would be on wooded land close to a former convict burial ground.

The planning bid follows the burial of a young Moslem woman in the grounds of a Southampton house.

The burial took place before a permanent cemetery could be established, and was dictated by extenuating circumstances but was carried out with full Government permission.

Moslem burials must take place within 24 hours of death. The woman's passing came as negotiations for a cemetery were under way, but before a permanent site could be found.

Yesterday, Lowdru Robinson, director of the Ministry of Development and Opportunity, said the Government had assisted two groups that make up the Moslem community -- the Bermuda Islamic Centre and Masjid Muhammad -- in the search for a cemetery.

The land is owned by the West End Development Co.

The burial in Southampton was the first in many years where a special licence was issued by the Government.

There were concerns from nearby residents but all conditions were met and it was strictly a one-off situation.
