Jane Austen society to meet
Bermuda next year.
The Jane Austen Society will hold its Millennium Meeting on the Island from May 2 to 9 with the aim of celebrating the Austen family links with Bermuda and to provide an "outstanding meeting'', a Press release issued recently stated.
Jane Austen's brothers, Frank and Charles, were stationed in Bermuda during their naval careers.
Charles Austen was in Bermuda from 1805 to 1810 when he was in command of a Bermuda-built sloop named The Indian . In 1826 he returned to the Island as captain of HMS Aurora .
His older brother Frances was Commander-in-Chief North Atlantic and West Indies Station with his flagship HMS Vindictive and was based at Bermuda and Halifax from 1845 to 1848.
Members of Jane Austen Societies from around the world will gather in Bermuda to examine the writer and the Navy and trace her development of the theme in her novel Persuasion.
