DeSilva, Whitter advance: Bermuda Brief

the Caribbean Development Tennis Championships today, despite experiencing differing fortunes yesterday in their final round-robin matches.

DeSilva had already booked herself into the quarter-finals but suffered a first defeat in a close encounter against Susy Molina of the Netherland Antilles, going down 7-5, 6-4.

Whitter, also assured of his place in the last 16 of the boys' competition, warmed up for that with a three set win over Jose Luis Muguruza of Aruba.

Whitter lost the first set 4-6 but came back to triumph 6-4, 6-3 in the next two.

Danielle Downey, whose two defeats mean she will enter the consolation group, was also in action as, with DeSilva, she booked a place in the doubles semi-finals. The pair overcame Whitney Renfren of Surinam and Kira Leung of Guyana 6-2, 7-5.

Their opponents in the last four will be Sonia Ramcharran and Lisa Fungkee Fung of Trinidad. The match gives Downey a chance of exacting some measure of revenge as Fungkee Fung beat her in the round robin in straight sets, as well as putting her out of a tournament in August.

Whitter was also in doubles action, teaming up with Antigua's Ronald Spencer to beat two other Antiguans, Robert Belle and Brian Moreton, in a tight contest. The Bermudian and his partner eventually triumphed in a final set tie-break.
