Bail conditions included a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, two sureties, the surrender of all travel documents and a thrice-weekly report to Hamilton Police Station.

The youth, clad in a bright blue track suit and sneakers, stood flanked by his parents who sat motionless as Mr. King read the charges.

Mr. King told Gilbert he was not required to enter a plea.

The charges included: stealing a handbag from Helen Fordham on August 1 containing cash and possessions to a total value of more than $300; wounding and robbing Richard Whitfield of a wallet containing $40, credit cards and other documents valued at $180 on August 12; robbing Kenneth Hutchinson of a Seiko watch worth $200 on August 15; wounding and robbing James Weedon of a wallet containing $40 and 10 pounds, credit cards and other items worth $107; wounding and robbing Linda Lukitsch of a handbag, $84 cash, a $640 Cannon camera, Visa card, passports and airline tickets worth $939 on September 22; and the same day assaulting Brian Miller and doing him bodily harm.

Crown counsel Ms Nita Grewal made an application to oppose bail, but it was turned down by Mr. King after hearing submissions by defence lawyer Miss Elizabeth Christopher.

He will appear in Magistrates' Court again on October 17.
