Hewson save ends marathon shoot-out

Recalled goalkeeper Chris Hewson?s spot-kick save sent MR Onions into the semi-finals of the Commercial Cup after a marathon shoot-out against PHC on Saturday which saw both sides take ten penalties each.

There was little to separate the sides during 90 minutes of of goalless play. PHC dominated the first half but it was Onions who created the better chances as Colin Keane shot over the bar and Steve Smith?s long range effort was well saved.

Onions took control of the second half and Keane should have scored early on but put his effort went wide and the PHC goalkeeper then made a superb save to keep out a Keane header.

PHC had opportunities to win the game late on but Hewson, back in the side after spending time off the Island, saved well from Sheridan (Baldy) Ming and substitute Keith Bell fired over the bar in the final minutes when it seemed easier to score.

Each side missed two out of the first five penalties and Onions thought they had won when Hewson saved the fifth PHC penalty but celebrations were cut short by the linesman?s flag indicating that Hewson had moved from his line before the kick was taken.

There were no further mistakes in sudden death until Hewson dived to his right to keep out the tenth PHC penalty, giving MR an 8-7 win.

BAA also went through on penalities against Tuff Dogs after a 46th minute effort from Des Johnson was cancelled out by Dogs? Nelson Martin with ten minutes left on the clock.

Officially BAA won 3-1 on penalties but were actually made to take all five spot kicks despite Dogs missing all but one of theirs.

Dandy Town Roots A came from behind to defeat Key West Rangers 3-1 at St. Johns Field.

The game started off evenly balanced but as the first half wore on, Key West stamped their authority on the match. Janeiro Tucker missed a few clear cut chances, managing to shoot wide after being gifted the ball by a Roots player on the edge of the area.

Tucker finally got on the scoresheet shortly before the break but after the interval Key West eased up as Roots tore back into the match with Darron Simmons reaching an Earl Richardson cross and rounding the keeper to even the score.

Roots then took the lead after a Walter Musson inswinging corner was met at the near post by Simons and his header was helped over the line by Key West defender Pernell Brangman.

Key West sub Kenny Thompson made an impact in the middle of the field but a determined Roots defence held on. Roots wrapped up a memorable victory when Simons? cross from the left was met by the onrushing Mark Trott who stabbed the ball home from six yards.

Meanwhile, Lobster Pot and Valley face a replay after the lack of pitch markings at Shelly Bay made their fixture unplayable.

There were also make-up fixtures in the B Division played on Saturday.

Island XI moved a step closer to the title with a 3-1 win over third-placed Vasco Mariners. Nathan Atcheson put Island ahead in the first minute after beating the keeper to a loose ball. Olympic sprinter Xavier James danced through the defence to make it 2-0 but Vasco came steaming back in the second half and grabbed a goal back from Ricard Arruda. However, a last-minute header from James sealed the win.

Somerset Bridge Peskies clinched a 4-4 draw for the second week running, sharing the points with Devonshire Rec Lions with a last gasp penalty from Gary Mallory who had already grabbed a hat-trick. Jerome Richards scored a first-half brace for Lions while Trevor Bailey and Ruffins Hill had Bridge 4-1 up with 15 minutes remaining until Mallory, who had scored in the first half, notched three more including his 88th minute effort from the spot.
