the US Naval Air Station's American-Bermudian Friendship Festival air show next month.

Only 12-feet long and less than four feet high at the cockpit, the Freedom is the smallest man-carrying jet in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

It weighs less than 450 pounds which is less than the average motorcycle.

Pilot Bob Bishop is capable of taking the Freedom to speeds of up to 350 mph and altitudes of 27,000 feet. He is also capable of performing a full range of aerobatics.

In 1975 the jet was used by the US government in testing the effectiveness of the cruise missile in evading Russian radar. The test results had a major impact on the decision to deploy the cruise missiles aboard Air Force B-52s.

It was used at the beginning of the movie Octopussy when the super spy flew the aircraft through a hangar to evade a missile.

Mr. Bishop is the plane's builder as well as pilot. He has logged over 7,000 hours of flight time, half of which has been performing and teaching aerobatics.

He was the recipient of the Sword of Excellence Award in 1987 for his outstanding contributions to field airshows.
