Job interview scheme planned for students
offering a workshop to groom them for the work place.
Work ethics and dress, interview techniques and tips on resume writing will be taught to young people aged 15 to 17.
The aim, said course organiser and human resources expert Ms Zolee Davis, is to introduce young people to the rigours and discipline of work.
Students who complete the week long workshop will receive a certificate and a good opportunity of finding a summer job with the banks, insurance companies, and hotels that support the programme.
According to Ms Davis, the pilot programme has the backing of Department of Education and the business sector.
"I realised there was a niche to fill,'' she said. "There is a definite need for something for that age group.'' A database matches students with employers. But those who find work through the programme are given a four to six week probationary period to prove themselves. If they fail to measure up, they are pulled out.
"We are very strict,'' Ms Davis said. "This is not a baby sitting service.'' The course is specifically aimed at Government secondary school students whom, she hopes, will benefit from increased self-esteem and a better sense of career direction.
"A lot of them have never been involved in anything. They need to be taught about dress and attitude.'' Many, she added, also had unrealistic salary expectations but lacked the necessary skills to get the jobs they wanted.
The programme begins on July 3. For more information call 296-0565.
