Bermuda Tattoo promises to be extravagant affair
By John Burchall Lovers of military-style marching bands, fireworks and deftly precise drill movements will enjoy the Bermuda Tattoo that begins on November 2 and runs until November 4.
More than 6,000 people packed into the National Stadium grounds last year for the 1994 Tattoo and this year will be only the third time that a three-day Tattoo has been held in Bermuda. The first three-day Tattoo was held in 1957.
The Jamaican Military Band, the oldest living remnant of the old West Indian Regiment, will be performing for the first time at the Bermuda Tattoo.
In addition to their display during the Tattoo, they will join the Lincoln and Welland Regiment Band and perform at the opening of Parliament on November 3.
"The Jamaican Defence Force Band in particular are keen to get out into the Bermudian community and perform for Bermudian society,'' Bermuda Tattoo organiser Major Barrett Dill said.
"Next Tuesday at 12 noon they will be performing at City Hall on the steps for the crowd. This was a specific request from them because they are really exited about coming down and they wanted to do something in addition to the actual Tattoo.'' The Jamaican Defence Force band arrives in Bermuda on Saturday evening at 10 p.m. while His Majesty's 10th of Foot Regiment Band arrives at 12 noon on the same day.
High expectations for the Bermuda Tattoo The Lincoln and Welland Regiment and Band arrive next Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Lincoln and Welland Regiment and band which hails from Ontario, Canada, His Majesty's 10th of Foot Regiment Band, the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band and the Warwick Majorettes and Drum Corps will all be performing again this year.
And the Bermuda Regiment's silent drill team, band and drum corps will also be featured.
"It's going to be a great spectacle,'' Major Dill said. "On the final night there will be a tribute to Guy Fawkes Day and we will have a fireworks display with the three military bands playing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.
"There will also be a surprise on the final night. I can only say that it is something that they have not seen in Bermuda for quite sometime.
"People should come to the Tattoo because it will be wholesome family entertainment. It's going to be an occasion where the whole family can come out and enjoy the entertainment.
"Lots of Bermuda's youth will be participating and it will be a chance for them to showcase their talents as well as the more seasoned Bermudian performers and the international acts.''
