Bermudian Ming is a hit in the Big Apple

The work of Bermuda-born sculptor Bill Ming, already acclaimed in the UK, is currently on show in two major art museums in New York City.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Studio Museum in Harlem, in cooperation with the Caribbean Cultural Centre, are presently exhibiting work by around 130 British artists of African and Asian descent. A photograph of one of Mr.

Ming's works (`Preservation Log') is featured in the brochure for the shows.

Entitled `Transforming the Crown' and spanning a 30-year period, the exhibition features "established, mid-career, and emerging artists working in virtually every medium''. The shows represent an "unparalleled'' exploration of African, Asian and Caribbean influences in contemporary Britain and has focussed specifically on presenting this diversity of the island nation to American audiences.

Mr. Ming, whose one-man show provided the setting for the Queen's visit to the Bermuda National Gallery in 1994, attracted major attention in British art circles when he was awarded the Henry Moore Sculpture Fellowship at John Moores University in Liverpool, from 1992-3.

Bermuda National Gallery director Laura Gorham saw the exhibitions on a recent visit to New York. "I had previously seen Bill when I was over in the UK and he had told me he had been invited to take part in the New York shows. As it happened, I had an appointment with the director of the Harlem museum in November -- we are hoping to do a show with them in the future -- and he told me that Bill's work was actually on show at both locations. He said that a tour and panel discussion by one of the curators was taking place that night, so I went along to see his sculpture at the Bronx Museum as well. It looked extremely impressive!'' Bill Ming, who has lived in Britain since 1971, studied at Mansfield College of Art and obtained his degree from Maidstone College of Art. Based in Nottinghamshire, he has since taught at several colleges and acted as an advisor for East Midlands Arts and as an exhibition selector.

The New York exhibitions continue through March 15 1998.
