Shark sighting encouraging sign for reefs
Divers caught a glimpse of a hammerhead shark while exploring a South Shore shipwreck on Saturday.
Chris Gauntlett of Blue Water Divers said they spotted the shark while diving around The Hermes, which lies about a mile off Horseshoe Bay.
Mr Gauntlett said: “This is a first for us, as far as it’s rare to see sharks while diving in Bermuda.
“It’s exciting. We often talk about the sharks further off shore, but seeing them closer to the reef is pretty uncommon.
“To see one at a normal dive site is encouraging. High-end predators are a sign of a healthy reef system, — so this is actually a really good thing.”
Mr Gauntlett added the shark could be the same one spotted in St George’s and at Shelly Bay this year, but it is difficult to be sure unless the shark was tagged.
