A play with a message
touching on numerous social and political issues, in a play at City Hall this week.
Dr. Sebronette Barnes flew in from Philadelphia to take part in "Joy in the Morning'' which, according to the composer of the play's music Eloise Furbert, "seeks to convey the message that through life's difficulties, one's faith opens the way to joy''.
Ms Furbert explained that the play is set in Bermuda just prior to the 1998 General Election.
"It chronicles the story of a young mother struggling with her own identity in a mixed marriage, and demonstrates the importance of family, and an unwavering faith in God.
"This drama also highlights the value of developing the ability to look beyond the surface to find the beauty that is within each and every one of us.'' The play was written by Educational Officer Shangri-La Durham Thompson, and features original music by Ms Furbert.
It is being jointly presented by Solid Rock Foundation and Joy Productions.
Soprano soloist Malinda Simmons will make her acting debut in the lead role of this production and will play alongside Dr. Barnes, of Philadelphia, who is presently a music professor at Cheyney University in Pennsylvania.
In 1997, Dr. Barnes was one of the top winners in the Vocal Music Competition in Ibela, Sicily and will be soon releasing a CD featuring the works of Women Composers.
"Vocal renditions by both of these ladies are promised to lift the spirits of the audience,'' Ms Furbert said.
Shows will begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week.
Tickets for Thursday night have been sold out but they are available for the other nights in advance from Caesar's Pharmacy in Somerset, True Reflections and the Christian Bookstore and City Hall box office on the nights at $25 each.
A special group rate of $15 will be granted on request.
