Government's jobless figure off the mark
1,500 people, according to the latest Census report.
And they will conduct an Island-wide unemployment survey next month in order to get a more accurate fix on the jobless situation.
Government released the summary report of the Census, which revealed that six percent of the population, or 2,102 people, were unemployed between May and June last year.
But according to Government statistics based on the Employment Register, 595 people were registered as unemployed and had not been placed in a job at the end of June last year.
Home Affairs Minister the Hon. Irving Pearman said the Government unemployment office and the Government statistics office were discussing how best to conduct the survey.
But he said it would probably be held over three days at all post offices.
Unemployed people would be asked to come in and give details of how long they had been without a job and whether any other members of their family were without jobs.
Mr. Pearman said efforts by the Government Employment Office to update the Employment Register and to fill jobs through sitting on the Immigration Board had been successful, but the Ministry now wanted a better fix on the situation.
