Two young Bermudian lawyers were recently called to join the Bermuda Bar Association.

Oonagh Goodred, the daughter of Crown counsel Leighton Rochester, and Vanessa Lovell took part in a double Call to the Bar ceremony recently in the Supreme Court.

The proceedings took place in somewhat cramped conditions as well wishers and supporters of the two women packed the courtroom to overflowing.

Chief Justice Austin Ward, in hearing the motions, noted that it was significant that two females, representing different sections of the community, should be called at the same time.

Both Ms Goodred -- working for the law firm Moniz, George and LeVigne and Miss Lovell -- who works in the trust department at Appleby, Spurling & Kempe -- have travelled extensively.

Ms Goodred completed her primary education in Bermuda and three months at Berkeley Institute before going to New Era High School in Panchangi, India, for three years.

She completed high school at Finchley Manorhill in Barnett, London, and went on to Staffordshire University, then the Council of Legal Education, Grays Inn. She is a member of Middle Temple.

Miss Lovell, a student of Warwick Academy and Saltus, received a Bachelor of Arts with honours in Economics from Queen's University in Kingston, Canada.

She received her law degree with commendation from the University of Woverhampton in England and was called to the British Bar at Grays Inn.

Her work and study programmes have seen her travel to North America, Europe, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Australia, and Asia, the Pacific islands and southern Africa.

Ms Goodred recently moved on to firm Moniz, George & LaVigne because she said she felt she could gain more litigation experience in a smaller law firm.

Called to the Bar: Bermudians Oonagh Goodred (L) and Vanessa Lovell are the newest members of the Bermuda Bar Association. They were honoured by friends at a packed Supreme Court ceremony in late June.
