Tough start for under 14 squad
the Northern Ireland Milk Cup.
On Monday the under 14 team were blasted 8-2 by Glasgow Rangers where they appeared to be suffering from jet-lag after 30 hours of travelling and exhausting opening ceremonies.
Coach Jon Beard explained that the result was not a fair reflection of the competitiveness Bermuda showed against a side containing several Scottish Schoolboy internationals.
One of those internationals scored a hat-trick and is already being touted as a future Rangers first-teamer.
Tyrone Smith scored Bermuda's first goal following a corner, while Keemo Smith later tallied to make the scoreline 6-2, before Rangers rifled home two more strikes.
The match was played in arduos conditions with steady rain throughout.
Bermuda, though, slogged it out and were able to create numerous chances, although failing to convert many opportunities.
Yesterday, better fortunes presented themselves as Bermuda were pitted against Dundonald.
Trailing 1-0 after just 10 minutes Bermuda clawed their way back, finally drawing level on account of a strike from Damon Ming.
They also benefitted from superlative goalkeeping by Thomas Smith, keeping them in the match with a string of good saves.
"They showed good teamwork,'' said Beard. "The boys played extremely well.
It was a superb team performance.'' Northern Ireland manager Billy Bingham opened the tournament, while officials from newly promoted Premier Division club Newcastle and First Division Middlesboro were on hand to witness the start of the event, being touted by many as the best youth tournament in Europe.
Today sees Bermuda taking the pitch against Everton, who were beaten 1-0 by Dundonald on Monday.
