Governor's car stalls during procession
Governor in a hurry.
And when your Daimler limo is heading a funeral procession, any breakdown will drive you -- not to mention others -- just car... azy.
Lord Waddington's bad break happened on Monday during the stately funeral procession for the late Progressive Labour Party leader L. Frederick Wade.
As the limo crawled along Cedar Avenue, it stalled and let out the tell-tale signs of a machine that has clearly had its day.
Looking a touch flustered, Lord and Lady Waddington quickly abandoned the vehicle and clambered into a blue car behind.
It was then left to Bermuda Regiment members, boasting starched uniforms and highly-buffed shoes, to do the decent thing...push the clapped-out Daimler to the side of the road.
As for the Governor's Aide-de-Camp, Brian Gonsalves? Well, he made the rest of the journey to Pembroke's St. John's Churchyard by foot.
"It was lucky there was a car behind the Daimler and we were near the churchyard. I didn't mind walking,'' Capt. Gonsalves told The Royal Gazette yesterday.
"I don't think there was any real hold-up to the procession.'' Capt. Gonsalves explained the Daimler was 14 years old, and had become increasingly prone to problems.
"I think the car may have overheated. There could have been something wrong with the battery.''
