Local residents are urged to defend marine environment
resources and the fishing industry.
Letters with opinions on the topic can be submitted to the Director of Agriculture & Fisheries before the end of the month.
The Environment Ministry is drafting a Green Paper on the topic which is designed to be a reference document for Government to better enable them to make policy decisions on the industry into the future.
Wayne Carey, chairman of the Bermuda National Trust's Marine Environment Committee, said the issue should be of concern to everyone.
"The sustainability of our marine environment is paramount and should be of concern to each and every one of us,'' he said.
Mr. Carey also urged members of the public to make their voices heard on the matter.
"There are very complex issues to be dealt with and it is extremely important that the diverse views of the people of Bermuda be expressed and listened to,'' he said. "The Minister of the Environment has opened a dialogue on the future of the marine environment, and we urge as many people as possible to take advantage of this opportunity to make their views heard.'' The Trust's Marine Environment Committee will be making its own submission to Government, addressing the many issues that they say put Bermuda's waters at risk.
Members of the public interested in sending letters should address them to Director, Agriculture & Fisheries, P.O. Box HM 834, Hamilton HM CX. The deadline is April 30.
